Gothic Architecture

Who We Are

Crafting Architectural Legends from Shadow and Stone

Our Studio

Our Story

Started back in 2011, we weren't your typical architectural firm from the get-go. While everyone else was chasing minimalist white boxes, we got obsessed with something darker, more atmospheric. There's this whole language in Gothic architecture that modern design kinda forgot about - the drama, the verticality, the play between light and shadow.

We're based out of Toronto but our projects stretch across Canada and beyond. What drives us? It's that moment when a client walks into a space we've designed and just... gets it. That feeling of stepping into something that's both ancient and futuristic at the same time.

We don't do cookie-cutter. Every building tells a story, and we're here to make sure it's a good one. Whether it's restoring a century-old church or designing a contemporary home with Gothic bones, we treat each project like it's gonna outlive us all - because it probably will.

The Minds Behind the Madness

Our team's a weird mix of history buffs, design nerds, and problem-solvers

Eleanor Blackwood

Eleanor Blackwood

Principal Architect & Founder

Elle's been sketching Gothic cathedrals since she was like eight years old. Studied at Waterloo, spent five years in Edinburgh restoring medieval buildings, then came back to Canada with a crazy idea - what if we could make dark architecture work for modern living? She's the vision behind our most ambitious projects and has this uncanny ability to see potential in buildings everyone else has written off.

Marcus Chen

Lead Designer - Contemporary Division

Marcus is our bridge between old and new. Grew up in Vancouver, got his degree from UBC, and somehow ended up obsessed with brutalism and Gothic architecture at the same time. He's the guy who figures out how to put pointed arches in a LEED-certified building without making it look like a theme park. Also makes a mean espresso, which keeps the rest of us functional during deadline weeks.

Sofia Ramirez

Sofia Ramirez

Senior Restoration Specialist

Sofia's basically a detective, but for buildings. She can look at a crumbling stone facade and tell you exactly what happened to it over the past century. Did her Master's in heritage conservation and worked on restoration projects across Europe before joining us in 2016. If there's a historic building involved, she's running point. Her attention to detail borders on supernatural.

James MacLeod

Technical Director & Sustainability Lead

Jamie's the practical one who makes sure our wild ideas actually stand up and don't break the bank. Structural engineer by training, he's obsessed with making dark architecture energy-efficient - which is harder than it sounds when you're working with massive stone structures. He's also into rock climbing, which probably explains why he's so good at solving vertical design challenges.

How We Actually Work

We're not gonna lie - our process is kinda intense. We start every project by getting obsessed with it. Site visits at different times of day to see how the light changes. Historical research if there's existing structures. Tons of sketches before we even touch a computer.

Then comes the fun part - we bring you into the studio and walk you through everything. No architectural jargon, no confusing blueprints you can't read. We use 3D models, physical mockups, whatever it takes to make sure you can actually see what we're proposing.

Construction phase? We're on-site regularly. Not micromanaging, but making sure the vision doesn't get lost in translation. Some firms hand off the plans and disappear - we stick around because details matter, especially when you're working with complex Gothic elements.

What Drives Us

Historical Integrity

When we restore old buildings, we're not just fixing stuff - we're preserving stories. Every detail matters because someone centuries ago cared enough to build it right. We owe them that same respect.

Modern Relevance

Gothic architecture shouldn't be stuck in museums. We adapt these timeless principles for how people actually live today - with better insulation, smart technology, and sustainable materials that'll last just as long.

Atmospheric Design

Architecture should make you feel something. We're constantly thinking about shadow, light, texture, scale - all the stuff that creates an emotional response when you walk through a space. That's where the magic happens.
